Visit Rockaway Borough
Rockaway Borough is a small-scale history and community destination rather than a conventional tourist town. Its strongest visitor experiences are the Rockaway Borough Historical Museum, Morris Canal and Revolutionary-era stories, Park Lake, Main Street, neighborhood parks and a calendar of local events that becomes especially active in fall.
The Borough's compact size makes it easy to combine several stops in one afternoon. A history visit can flow naturally into a walk around Park Lake, lunch or dinner on Main Street or U.S. 46, and a community program or museum open house.
Rockaway Borough is not Rockaway Township. Rockaway Townsquare, Mount Hope Avenue, Picatinny Arsenal, White Meadow Lake and Green Pond are in Rockaway Township. This page keeps Borough attractions and lodging geography separate even though both municipalities commonly use “Rockaway, NJ 07866” mailing addresses.

Rockaway Borough Historical Museum
The Rockaway Borough Historical Committee operates the museum at 199 West Main Street, next to Donatoni Community Park. Exhibits preserve the Borough's history as an iron-manufacturing center, Revolutionary-era community, Morris Canal stop and later industrial town.
The museum normally opens to the public on the fourth Sunday of the month from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
The museum reopens after its July–August renovation and exhibit-update period with a scheduled Sunday open house.
Additional 2026 open houses are scheduled for October 25, November 29 and December 20.

Historic Rockaway Borough
Rockaway's history is unusually rich for such a compact place. Early settlement, iron production, the American Revolution, the Morris Canal, railroads and industry all left visible traces in and around the Borough's central streets.

Park Lake
Park Lake, 165 Lakeside Drive, is one of the Borough's most recognizable outdoor spaces. The Borough maintains the lake and surrounding recreational property, including the walking area and seasonal beach facilities.
The lake provides a convenient neighborhood setting for walking, sitting outdoors and pairing recreation with nearby Borough destinations.
The Borough maintains a public-beach facility at Park Lake. Swimming and organized beach use are seasonal and subject to current Recreation Department rules and lifeguard availability.
Recreation planning for 2026 included new benches, paving work, beach reconfiguration and evaluation of dock placement.
Check before swimming. Beach access, lifeguard availability, water conditions and program rules can change by season. Confirm current Recreation Department information before making a special trip for swimming.

Getting to & around Rockaway Borough
Rockaway Borough is easiest to reach by car. U.S. 46 borders and crosses the commercial portions of the community, while Interstate 80 provides quick regional access. Main Street is the Borough's local east-west spine.
The most practical way to combine the museum, Park Lake, restaurants, Main Street and nearby Morris County destinations.
The Borough has no NJ TRANSIT passenger-rail station. Dover and Denville are the most practical nearby stations on the Morris & Essex and Montclair-Boonton lines.
Rockaway Borough maintains municipal parking areas around the central business district. Observe posted time limits and park only in designated spaces.
Several municipal and recreation lots prohibit parking between 2:00 AM and 6:00 AM. Do not assume a park, library or public lot can be used for overnight vehicle storage.
Event parking: Main Street and park-area parking may be modified during special events. Follow temporary Borough signs and avoid using private restaurant or shopping-center lots unless you are a customer there.

Rockaway Borough has no public campground. For visitors who want an outdoor overnight stay, the Morris County Park Commission operates a substantial campground in nearby Jefferson Township.
955 Weldon Road, Jefferson Township. The county campground offers 18 paved RV sites, eight tent sites and four Adirondack shelter sites.
Reservations are accepted for the April–November camping season, with different stay limits for RV, tent and shelter sites.
